Lose It! for iPhone App Review

Losing weight is never fun. Okay, for some people it is, but for the vast majority of people who would like to lose a few pounds and can’t figure out why they’re not losing weight, this is the perfect app. Counting calories might be sooooo 1987, but it’s one of the best ways to lose weight and keep track of what you’re eating.

Essentially, Lose It! is a calorie counter, weight diary, and exercise tracker all in one. Best of all, it’s free. Now, I don’t actually need to lose weight, but I know I eat all of the wrong things and pay no mind to it because “ignorance is bliss.” However, I’ve been increasingly worried that all of my double bacon cheeseburgers are going to catch up with me in the form of heart disease and weight gain when I get older, and I use Lose It! as a way to train myself to eat healthier.

Pros:

  • Starting a diet program is easy. Enter your starting weight, your goal weight, and some major stats like height and exercise, and you’re ready to rock. You can eat to maintain your weight or to lose up to 2 pounds a week. Lose It! even gives you an estimated goal achievement date.
  • Logging food and exercise is easy and to the point. Throw some exercise in there and watch your allotted daily calories increase.
  • Custom foods. Custom recipes. Custom exercises. These are all useful if you don’t want to
  • Lose It! backs up all of your progress onto their online servers. You cannot add food or exercise through the website, but if you ever reset your phone, all of your progress will still be there.
  • Forums. A large network of friends. Endless possibility of motivation. There is no reason you should not keep track. Watching your friends’ progress should motivate you to keep up with your own plan as well.
  • Did I mention it’s free? Nothing to lose.

Cons:

  • The built-in database sucks and is incomplete; if you want your nutrients to be accurate, you will have enter them manually based on the nutritional facts found on the package. This can be a pain in the ass, but if you find yourself eating a lot of the same foods, entering it once will work.
  • Nutrients are shown as percentages rather than an easy-to-view pie chart. For those who don’t track nutrients, this is not a big deal.
  • Food and exercise can’t be added through their website. This is the one and only dealbreaker for me as I can enter food much faster on my computer than on my phone.

There are some other diet apps out there, but they are all paid. Everyone I’ve spoken to who has tried the others still primarily use Lose It. Even if you’ve never tried to diet in your entire life, you should try this one out.
